Eisenhower's 50th Year

Karen Torbert (back to us) is the band director at Eisenhower High School. My Alma Mater is celebrating its 50th year. Karen sent out an invitation to all Alumni to participate in the half time activities at the Ike/Lawton High football game. She even allowed former band students to play the school song. Being the tease that I am, I sent her a text and told her to count me in. I even told her I would play the tuba and there was no need to send me the music...I had it "memorized." In reality, Karen knew as well as I did, that I never have played the tuba (or any other instrument). So she "got me back." When I got to the rehearsal, over the microphone she called out: "Don...Don Barnes! Where are you?" I raised my hand and she said: "I have your tuba!" So what else is a guy supposed to do...you HAVE to listen to the band director/teacher...so I went up and got my tuba. The rest is now history!

Shot of the action

On my way to the field

Oh! Here is another familiar face! Hey, wait a minute! Pastor Greg Erway, you grew up in Kansas! Oh well, he REALLY does play that sax! Seems that everyone wanted to get in on the act!

Half time routine

Teams united!

More half time

THIS is what Karen really visualized...the largest "E" in Ike's history! Great fun! Thanks Karen for the opportunity!

I even made some sounds come out of this thing!

Last hooray on the tuba...first and only performance

Crowd pleaser for sure!
